You still can't browse videos with a voice command, but I usually know what I want to watch on Netflix. Saying, "Hey, Google, play How I Met Your Mother on the the living room TV" works reliably. You can also set downtime hours when the Home won't respond to your commands. The Nest Hub Max has a built-in Nest Cam, so it can detect motion when you're away and send you an alert.
Aside from Google Home devices, you can also access Google Assistant on your phone. It comes built right into modern Android phones, but you can also download Google Assistant for your iPhone. The original Google Home device is essentially a single two-inch speaker and some computer hardware packaged up in a housing that looks something like an air freshener.

Drawing physical comparisons to an air freshener, the Google Home is comprised of a slanted top surface that doubles as a control surface for volume, play/pause, and invoking the Google Assistant. The latter was also possible through “Ok Google,” with the company adding a physical button on the rear to disable the microphone. I can say this with confidence as we have 2 Google Homes, 3 Hub Displays and 3 minis in our home so I can say this with 100% confidence. The difference in sound quality and decibel level is quite obvious, and is the next step down form Hub Max if you are comparing these products. Also your POV is quite narrow in only looking at these only as personal assistants. It is quite a shame that they have discontinued Google Home as it was quite superior to the Nest Minis.

Don’t expect to buy Google’s original Home speaker straight from the source. Google’s smart speaker lineup is currently comprised of four devices, with the latest being the Nest Mini from October 2019. The original Google Home today is “no longer available” from the US Google Store in a possible end for the nearly four-year-old Assistant device. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a standalone smart speaker that has Google Assistant built right in, either. Heck, the Nest Mini is Google's own answer for a cheaper alternative that doesn't suck, and you'll like it every bit as much as you would its older and more expensive cousin.

The smart speaker field is now loaded with great options, and all of the good things I've said about the Home in this review also apply to the affordable $50 Google Home Mini and the booming $400 Google Home Max. For $130, the Home more than earns its keep -- and it keeps getting better. It's well worth your consideration, especially if you're invested in Android, Chromecast or any of the Home's compatible smart home platforms. You also don't have to worry about it getting outdated, as all of the many features Google's added to the Home since its launch have been pushed to its existing devices.

None of this means your original Google Home is going to stop working or that you should toss it into a recycle bin somewhere. But if you're looking for a replacement or just want to try the smartest assistant for the first time, you have so many other and better options. Heck, there are even all sorts of ways to get the full-blown Google Assistant experience without needing an old product staying on the shelves. Check — Sony, JBL, Bose, and even Google itself offer Bluetooth headphones that work seamlessly with Assistant and require no button tapping or fiddling. You betcha, and you'll find companies like Sonos with it's Sonos Beam and Sonos Move ready to give you a better-sounding Assistant than Google's old fabric and plastic models could ever offer.
